Chess in Vilnius, from bar blitz to school circles
Chess in Vilnius gathers around one busy city club and the rooms it plays in: Tuesday blitz at Užupio kavinė, Monday games in the bar Rūsio Aidai, and rated leagues, rapid marathons and variant Fridays at a studio on Žalgirio gatvė. The Panorama hotel fills with summer opens and monthly blitz, academies teach children across town, and many schools keep an after-class chess circle.

Chess960 at a Vilnius board
Over-the-board Chess960 in Vilnius turns up in one series: Variantas penktadieniui, the Friday variant evenings of Vilniaus šachmatų klubas at Kamilės šachmatų studija on Žalgirio gatvė, which rotate through Bughouse, Hand & Brain, Dice Chess and Fischer chess. The tournament server lists a Freestyle evening of the series on 19 December 2025, the club’s calendar gives the date 20 November 2026 for a Fischer chess evening, and the club’s page on chess variants sets out the Chess960 rules it plays by.
With the back-row pieces shuffled into one of 960 starting positions, memorised openings stop helping from the first move. Away from the Friday boards, the same shuffled start can be played online at ch960.com.

How entries are kept in order
The register holds 88 entries, and 87 of them are active or still waiting for a newer dated trace. They rest mostly on the city club’s own calendar, the tournament server’s lists of organiser and hall, the Lithuanian federation’s pages of places to play and to learn, and the timetable of the provider that runs the school circles. The pages were opened on .
Within each list the entry with the most recent dated trace comes first; no place is graded or promoted. Where no page answers a question, the entry says “not stated by sources” rather than guessing. What the source marks and the two status lines mean, and where the register stops, is explained under how entries are checked.
Has an evening moved, or a circle closed?
Vilnius chess changes rooms often: the Monday evenings have already left one food court for a bar, and school timetables are redrawn every September. If an entry here has fallen behind, or a club, studio, circle or tournament is missing, send a short note with a link to a page that shows it.
